User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.7) Gecko/20070914 Firefox/2.0.0.7
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.6 (20070728)

This problem suddenly occurred. I select the "Get Mail" button. I first receive the status "Connecting to mail.comcast.net". This is quickly followed by "Connected to mail.comcast.net...". At that, the status message remains without end. I am free to do everything else with the e-mail client. I also can successfully send messages. I just can’t get any new mail. If I select “Get Mail” again, a dialog box pops up saying, “This folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages”.

Somewhat but not immediately prior to this problem, I had deleted with Internet Explorer 7 all of my browsing history including form data and passwords. At first, I thought that this was just a matter of me needing to reset my password for the pop server. Strangely, I am not prompted for a password by Thunderbird when I "Get Mail". This is the case even if I first take the following two steps:

1. In Thunderbird, under Options - Passwords - Edit Passwords - Remove All; and
2. Delete all browsing history again under IE v.7.

However, when I attempt to send mail for the first time after this, I am prompted for a password, and the sending works as expected.

I don't think that this is a problem at the ISP. I installed and configured a freeware program called ePrompter. It had no problem popping my e-mails from mail.comcast.net.

I also have taken all of the Mozilla-required steps before reporting this bug. I also tried disabling McAfee SecurityCenter virus protection and firewall. Furthermore, accessing my un-popped" mail from a browser gateway, I tried moving different combinations of e-mails out of the servers inbox in case there was a problem with one particular e-mail. No single e-mail could be gotten. By the way, none of these e-mails are large.

Here is one more bit of information that may be helpful: While I am in the state of "Connected to mail.comcast.net...", the output from the diagnostic program NetStat reports the following:

  TCP E1705:2888 mail.comcast.net:pop3 CLOSE_WAIT

I would appreciate any help that could be offered.

Donald

The problem was caused by a flawed McAfee update. They has since distributed a new update which fixes the problem.
