Ben you broke the UI design for the sidebar panels which was based on usability feedback and had worked much better for end users, than flat non-descriptive look we had before. We need to restore this beack for beta2. Slamm and I were already working on improving the space consumtion of the tabs.
adding nsbeta2 keyword as this needs to be fixed before PR2 goes out

This is a regression of bug 28353. See that bug for more info about exactly how to implement the tabs.
I will revert the changes. Note that this is because I believe bug 28353 makes a reasonable case, not because I endorse the current implementation which is incredibly poor in the current context. Once this bug is fixed I will file a new bug on UE to produce a tab UI that does not suck.

Reopening for implementation in the Classic skin. Classic has better affordances than Modern for every other kind of widget, so it seems silly that Modern should have understandable sidebar tabs while Classic doesn't.

Summary: Broken tabs UI metaphor needs to be restored for sidebar panels → Tabs UI metaphor needs to be restored for sidebar panels
Ok, we have bug 53819 for doing this in Mac Classic, so I'm narrowing this bug down to Windows Classic only. You will probably have to use tabs with sloping edges here, like those in Lotus Word Pro for Windows. Even though they would look different from ordinary Windows tabs, they would be more than twice as obvious as the current rectangles, so the inconsistency would be worth it.

Sorry to disturb, but if you're going to wontfix a bug in Bugzilla you should really give a reason. For bonus points, post the results of a usability test showing that users found the rectangles easier to understand (i.e. quicker to navigate) than the tabs.
