I am having trouble sending mail to people outside the mozilla.com domain. I get 5.7.1 mail relay errors when I try to send test mail to @gmail accounts. This worked fine this morning, but sometime this afternoon things changed. justdave says I am not authenticating as marcia@mozilla.com, but I have made no changes to any of my settings and everything seems okay when I look at my account settings. I see the same issue with a new profile as well as an existing profile.

You also told me you're using a nightly build of Thunderbird, and this started after you upgraded to the lastest one, and nobody else is reporting problems. Unless someone else can reproduce it, I'm going to call this a Thunderbird bug in the latest nightly.
According to the server logs, you're sending an unauthenticated SMTP transaction, which then gets rejected because you a) weren't connecting from inside the colo, b) aren't sending the mail to a domain we host, and c) haven't authenticated as a mozilla.com user.
If your settings are set up to authenticate for SMTP, then your Thunderbird is broken and not following that setting.

Latest, as in 10-16 to 10-17? The tree's been closed for days now, since the afternoon of the 15th, so other than backouts of Core/Fx things, there shouldn't be any change. Does going back to the nightly from the 15th work? Does an SMTP log (http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp) show anything interesting?
(Does smtp/dm-mail01.mozilla.org have a cert that our new severe strictness absolutely refuses?)

I used to use Port 25 with no problem. I changed to Port 587 and now I am having no issues. Resolving this as WFM. It might have been a cert issue since it used to work fine.
