Details

On trunk, (SeaMonkey), in main mailnews window,

Select a newsgroup, let's call it "first".
Then right click on a second newsgroup (let's call it second) and in
the context dialog, select "Mark Newsgroup Read".

Nothing happens. The second group is not marked read.

Then, left click (select) that "second" group.
Then, right click on the selected group and choose "Mark Newsgroup Read".

This time, it works. It marks the group read.
This is WFM wit a self-built "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9a9pre) Gecko/2007100320 SeaMonkey/2.0a1pre", to give a rough possible regression range.
When you right click on the second newsgroup, does it then put a blue selection bar over the newsgroup entry?
This problem is intermittent. Happens sometimes, not every time.
Happens often enough that I filed this bug.
I simply don't care that it worked once out of a sample of one, Karsten.

Frank, that's a good question. I don't recall. The next time I see it,
I'll try to take notice.
See this on tb-current-trunk/linux too. Bug 243029 might be related.

bienvenu, do you think this related to Bug 243029 (which you assigned to)?
(ftr, still see this on trunk)
wsmwk - yes, it sounds like the same issue
Depends on: 243029
I can reproduce this in 3.0b4pre.

I agree. Don't know what fixed it. Maybe bug 496543 on 2009-06-18 (which doesn't have a test). It wirks with 20090619 build, but not with 20090601 build

I think you misread. I'm running the nightly builds, and I can reproduce it this morning, on a Thunderbird now labeled 3.0pre. Selecting "Mark as read" twice doesn't help, as suggested in 243029.

I'm on Ubuntu 9.04.

Can we re-open this?
comment 3 indicates this may be intermittent, so ... reopening
