User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071008 Firefox/2.0.0.8
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071008 Firefox/2.0.0.8
Everytime I try to spell check a word with repeated character (e.g. "loooooooooooong"), the software that I'm using (Firefox or Thunderbird) crash.
I've made the following test:
"long" > Everything ok
"loong" > Everything ok
"looong" > A little bit slow, but ok
"loooong" > Slow, but works
"looooong" > Very slow, but don't freeze
"loooooong" > Very very slow
"looooooong" > Crash application (Firefox or Thunderbird)
When the application crash (not responding), it uses 100% of CPU resources. This only happens with Portuguese (pt-PT) dictionary. If I use en-US dictionary everything works correctly.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Write some word with repeated character like "loooooooooooong"
2. Try to spell check that word with pt-PT dictionary (with other languages works fine)
Actual Results:
The application using the dictionary (Firefox or Thunderbird) hangs (not responding) and uses 100% of CPU resources.
Expected Results:
It should suggest the corrected word.
I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-FE11S with Windows XP Media Center Edition (Original). The system of this laptop went fully reinstalled (factory initial state) 3 days ago and every other application is working well.

I failed to replicate it with Firefox 2.0.0.8 on Ubuntu 7.04.
Could you please confirm me which version of the dictionary are you using? Is it the integrated version that comes with 2.0.0.8 or an extension that you installed? In the latter case, which version?
Thanks for the report,
João Miguel Neves

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.9 (en-US) and Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (en-US) on Microsoft Windows XP MCE.
Dictionary version is "Portugues Europeu 7.10.3.0".
I've installed the the following file in Firefox and Thunderbird: corrector_para_portugues_europeu-7.10.3.0-fx+tb+sm.xpi
Which I got from the following location:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/19782/corrector_para_portugues_europeu-7.10.3.0-fx+tb+sm.xpi
I'm glad for helping Mozilla to develop better products.
Best regards,

Confirmed behaviour using Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) and Firefox 2.0.0.6 / Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 and dictionary pt-PT (Portugues Europeu 7.10.3.0).
Behaviour does not happen with dictionaries pt-BR, en-US and en-GB but does happen also with dictionary es-ES. Those were the dictionaries I tested -- probably a test with more would be helpful to really see what's happening here.

Problem solved in Firefox versions 2.0.0.11 and 3.0b2 but remains in Thunderbird 2.0.0.9. Version of the dictionary tested: 7.12.12.0.

If nobody is able to replicate it with Firefox beta 3, I'll close this bug.

The bug is corrected on current version (2.0.0.11) of Firefox, but still exists on current version (2.0.0.9) of Thunderbird. This is not just a Firefox bug.

This has been fixed for Firefox 3+ and Thunderbird 3+. There will be no more releases/changes of Thunderbird 2 according to Simon Paquet (the maintainer of Thunderbird), so I'm closing this bug as fixed.
