I am running a Mac Pro, with dual 3.0 xeon duo core processors.  OS 10.4.1.. When I went to start up Firefox this evening, I found all the bookmarks gone and the toolbar shortcuts gone.  This is the first time I can remember a browser ever doing this.

That's because Firefox had a problem with your old profile (profile missing, damanged, or in use) and created a new one. Didn't you see a warning dialog ? If you can find the old profile (and it wasn't deleted), you can migrate your settings to the new one. Or unlock the old one, if it was locked.

not going to take further fixes on 2.x, feel free to reopen if you can reproduce on 3.x or current trunk
