After starting Thunderbird on the next morning, most of the emails were automatically deleted. Only the last 10 messages and some of the oldest were left (some real important messages are lost). This in ALL 13 email accounts, I configured in Thunderbird.
After opening the Inbox file of one email account with an editor I recognized that there were still many attachments present, but not shown in Thunderbird. The messages were deleted. Total message size of one inbox in Thunderbird: +- 1Mb, Total size of that Inbox file: +- 62 Mb

No special themes, no special features and no plugins installed.
The day before no problems, no system crash.

I read about this problem with version 1.5.0.8. As it happended now in 1.5.0.13 I thought it might not be resolved completly.

Mail can still be there, you can get help with how to get it back from the mozillazine forums and knowledge base articles.
Thanks, Magnus Melin!
Compacting did not help, but I recovered the messages via reindexing!
Glad it worked out for you!
->INCOMPLETE, as we're not likely to ever find out what caused it

BTW, tb 2.0 is available...
