Build Identifier:

In Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 on Linux, I setup a "custom" trash folder. When I now delete a message, the message is removed from source folder, but doesn't appear in the trash folder.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get an account at Google Mail (ask me, if you need an invitation)
2. In Thunderbird, setup an account to acess Gmail via IMAP (or rather IMAPS)
3. Start "about:config" and set mail.server.server4.trash_folder_name to "[Gmail]/Trash". The number might vary. For me, the Google Mail folders are all under the "[Gmail]" "folder". It might be, that this is "[Google Mail]".
4. Verify, that Tb is set to move deleted messages to the trash folder.
5. Delete an (unimportant) message by right clicking the message and selecting "delete" or by pressing the <Delete> key.
Actual Results:
The message is removed from the source folder. It's not shown in the destination folder (the "custom trash folder").

Expected Results:
The deleted message should be removed from the source folder and should be shown in the trash folder.
In this screenshot, you can see what preference setting I changed in "about:config" and how the Google Mail folders are shown for me.
First, read meta Bug 402793, and read all Web pages/documents pointed in it.
At least followings have relation to delete & "[Gmail]/Trash".

Second, see meta Bug 402793 comment #1, and get IMAP protocol log, and check real IMAP protocol level flow.

This is WFM for me. From the screenshot it looks like you don't have Trash set up to go to the gmail trash... as the trash icon shows on the non-gmail folder. (And yeah, it took some tinkering to get it set up like that...)
Do you restarted Tb after setting of mail.server.server4.trash_folder_name?

FYI.
As written in Bug 400931 Comment #8 and document pointed by it, and written in Bug 400931 Comment #9, use of "move to trash" model with "[Gmail]/Trash" as Trash folder is better to be avoided.
Based on your screenshot, it looks like you want the trash_folder_name set to "[Gmail]/Papierkorb".

this does not work for standard other languages trash bins too, like papierkorb.

the main problem is that thunderbird does not allow to configure the trash bin like the sent items in the same account tab.

It's already improved by Tb trunk(Tb 3 beta).
UI for "choice of trash bin" is changed from "request Trash of the account(i.e. folder named as 'Trash')" to "choose folder from already known(i.e. already subscribed) folders"(this adds trash_folder_name automatically).
UI improvement by trunk doesn't work currently if subfolder([Gmail]/Trash when Gmail IMAP). I've opened Bug 427311 for this issue on trunk.
This is not Gmail IMAP unique issue, is applicable to all non "Trash" cases. Gmail IMAP case is merely one of the non "Trash" cases.
Closing as DUP of Bug 182274.
