In Bug 112179 there is 4 years worth of discussion and because of that the issue has become what is this bug about instead of when should we fix it.
So very clear statement:
I would like to add the following feature to firefox:
In Tools ->Options->Advanced->Network->Connections
add two fields: proxy username and password, so store the proxy authentication there.

Hundreds of tools out there seem to have this but not firefox.
Just have a look at the preferences to
- ClamWin (proxy, username password)
- Exact Audio Copy (proxy username, password)
- LogMeIn (proxy, username, password).
- Windows Live Messenger (proxy, username, password)
- Mediamonkey (proxy, username, password)
etc. etc. etc.

Side effects to this feature missing are that checking for updates will time-out if I do not press ok to send the (pre-filled and remembered password) same is true for soem extensions that connect to the web in the same way (ie. chipmarks)
etc.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Setup a proxy that uses authentication
2.Start-up firefox: it will ask for username password
3.Check: remember password close firefox
4.Start firefox: it will remember username password but I still have to press ok.
This will not work for PAC files, which might resolve to multiple proxy-servers (depending on the URL, or when used for load-balancing), each with its own username & password. Windows Life Messenger does NOT work in my companies network for instance. And Internet Explorer will also prompt me for a password (although not every time), despite what people claim.

It's not that easy to solve !
Another issue that needs to be handled is that the proxy credentials may expire (at work, my proxy password changes 3 months). That still requires some kind of pop-up dialog for entering the new credentials, and I don't think it makes much sense to have two ways/dialogs to enter such info.
