User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.9) Gecko/20071025 Firefox/2.0.0.9 Build Identifier: 2.0.0.9 When starting Thunderbird, loading does not complete. Problem is intermittent. Task Manager shows it on the "Processes" tab, typically indicating about 1500K to 1900K memory usage. Task Manager does NOT show it on the "Applications" tab. Using "End process" in Task Manager will not kill the Thunderbird process. Using the taskkill command from the "Run" dialogue box also fails to kill the Thunderbird process. Attempts to start the program again eventually bring up a message stating "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system". Searched user forums, FAQ's, etc. but nothing found there fixes the problem. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Attempt to start the program. 2. 3. Actual Results: Mouse pointer indicates a process running for a few seconds, then nothing. Expected Results: Thunderbird should have started up.
Was this firefox or thunderbird?? Anyway, the workaround is usually to reinstall into another (empty) folder.
Both Firefox and Thunderbird at times. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes it starts properly, occasionally it will hang during startup. So I don't think that reinstalling will solve the root cause of the problem. From researching this on the web, it appears to be a problem between MS Vista and the Mozilla products.
Problem has also occurred on a second PC in the family. Also intermittent. Both are running Vista.
if you start profile manager, does it get there, and without high memory usage? there really aren't many reported startup bugs for vista (and most are not confirmed) - bug 395524, bug 396480, bug 365423, bug 389563, bug 384831
Keywords: hang
Summary: Hang on startup → Hang on startup windows vista and high memory (1-2Gb)
Bug 395524 sounds identical. Bug 396480 may be related. Bug 365423 may not be related. Bug 389563 sounds identical. Bug 384831 may not be related. The next time it hangs, I will try starting profile manager. One interesting recent observation. Happened on both PC's in the family. Firefox hung, as described herein. Could not kill the task. SO I launched the AVG control center. Clicked on "Information", then on "I need help - online services". Up popped a Firefox browser window with the AVG site up. {Firefox is the default browser.} After that worked on my machine, the next time my son's machine had Firefox hang on start, I did the same thing. Went to AVG, etc. And it also opened a Firefox browser window with the AVG site up on his machine. There was no reboot between Firefox hanging on startup and having AVG call up its website. Some time passed between the hang and clicking on "I need help - online services" in both instances. Not sure exactly how much time. So it seems that somehow another program calling up Firefox is able to start it, even though Firefox hung - just prior - after trying to directly start Firefox.
Sam: Did not hang on startup today [with profile manager]. As noted, this is an intermittent problem. Have you reinstalled on either PC? (need to eliminate that possible fix) How often do you normally start thunderbird? Frequency of bug - happens once a week?
Have not reinstalled on one PC. Did on the other, if I recall properly. How often I start Thunderbird and Firefox each day varies. Sometimes only once or twice a day. Sometimes perhaps four or five. I normally start Firefox and Thunderbird after booting up the PC, and do not shut them down unless I am shutting down the PC (but there are occasional exceptions to this). My son only starts up Firefox perhaps twice a day. Frequency of bug varies, and I have not kept a record. Varying perhaps from a couple of few times per week to five or six. My son has gotten frustrated enough with it that often he using IE now. He has not kept a record either. Not having any start up hangs with any other applications on either machine.
were you previously using version 1.5? on one or both machines? is it high cpu or low usage when hung
Both machines were new (sadly for my pocketbook). So neither had ever had v. 1.5 installed. Normal cup usage, if I recall properly.
(In reply to comment #9) Both machines were new (sadly for my pocketbook). So neither had ever had v. 1.5 installed. Normal cpu usage, if I recall properly. (typo correction)
Hung again today. Normal cpu usage. Immediately after hang, tried to start profile manager. Hung on profile manager also. At this point, task manager is showing two listings of firefox. After five or six minutes, was able to kill the second firefox process via task manager but not the first. Tried profile manager again. This time, profile manager came up. Still would not run the default profile, giving the error message about it already running. So I closed profile manager. Rebooted, firefox started okay this time.
(In reply to comment #0) > When starting Thunderbird, loading does not complete. Problem is intermittent. > Task Manager shows it on the "Processes" tab, typically indicating about 1500K > to 1900K memory usage. I experienced similar situation several times with free "Sunbelt Personal Firewall" (formerly "Keiro Personal Firwall"), on MS Win-XP Media Center Edition with SP2/Core2 Duo PC, while using any of Seamonkey, Firefox, Thunderbird. Problem in my environment occurred only when multiple MS Win users were active. Two users: (1) An account of "Power Users" for daily use, (2) Adminstrator And simplest recovery procedure was always following: - Restart of Sunbelt Personal Firewall To Sam Houston(bug opener): (Q1) Were multiple users logged-in when the problem occurred? (Q2) Can manual restart of AVG(I think firewall part only is sufficient) be a workaround when the problem occurs?
Q1 - Neither PC is on a network, and only one "user" was logged in, so no. Q2 - AVG is not affected by the problem. And am only using the free AVG (antivirus only, not firewall).
Thunderbird hung today. Normal cpu usage. Tried to start profile manager. Hung on profile manager also. At this point, task manager is showing two listings of Thunderbird. Could not kill the process via task manager. Had to reboot to get Thunderbird to start.
(In reply to comment #13) > And am only using the free AVG (antivirus only, not firewall). My concern is same one as Bug 395524 Comment #7, which you think "identical", by Ria Klaassen. What firewall software do you use? What will happen if you terminate firewall software when problem occur? (1) Problem occurs, and unable to kill via Task Manager (probably normal user, instead of Administrator user) (2) Switch to Administrator user(Login, but not log-off normal user) and terminate firewall software (3) Switch back to normal user (log-off of Administrator is better) (4) If Tb or Fx still hangs, try to kill Tb or Fx again via Task Manager
Zone Alarm firewall.
Your comment 14 is not clear - does "hung on profile manager" mean hung before you got the manager screen, or after you got screen? Also, what happens if you uncheck "get new messages on startup" for _all_ accounts? Does it still hang immediately on startup? In FF have you tried bug 395524 comment 14?
"Hung on profile manager" means hung before getting the manager screen. Not sure where my posting from 12/28 went to... Thunderbird hung yesterday. Could not kill process with task manager. Rebooted. Thunderbird started. Firefox hung. Could not kill process with task manager. Rebooted. Thunderbird started. Firefox hung again. Could not kill process with task manager. Rebooted. Finally both Thunderbird and Firefox started. If I recall properly, profile manager only started on one of these hangs. Unfortunately, can't recall on which occasion. CPU usage normal. IE started with no problems. Will try bug 395524 comment 14.
Typed in .\firefox.exe (from command prompt) in firefox directory (c:\program files\mozilla firefox\). Firefox started up. Exited firefox. Command prompt shows back to c:\program files\mozilla firefox>
Regarding your question on trunk build - have not tried. Working on Firefox 2.0.0.11, Thunderbird 2.0.0.9.
Thunderbird hung today. Could not kill process with task manager. Thunderbird Profile manager would start up.. Could not restart PC, had to do hard shutdown. Started PC again. Thunderbird started. Firefox hung. Firefox Profile manager would start up. Could not kill process with task manager. Rebooted without problem. Thunderbird started. Firefox started. IE will start without problems. Normal CPU usage at all times.
Went for the past week doing two things: - Did not use Readyboost. - Always started both Tbird & Ffox before plugging in the ethernet cable. No hangs all week. Today, was not using Readyboost but plugged in the ethernet cable before starting Tbird. Hung. Rebooted. Started Tbird & Ffox before plugging in the ethernet cable. Started fine. Guess it still could be coincidence, but looks more like correlation.
Not that anyone really cares, but the problem has not occurred since I stopped using Readyboost. So there appears to be a conflict between Readyboost & Mozilla. Have recently updated both Tbird & FFox, now using 2.0.0.12 (20080213) & 2.0.0.12 (20080201) (respectively).
Summary: Hang on startup windows vista and high memory (1-2Gb) → Hang on startup windows vista and high memory (1-2Gb) due to Readyboost
(In reply to comment #0) > typically indicating about 1500K to 1900K memory usage (In reply to comment #23) > So there appears to be a conflict between Readyboost & Mozilla. When profile manager is started and profile list is displayed, virtual/real memory size of around 1700K is observed on MS Win XP. Can "start profile manager explicitly" be a workaround? (force stop/wait at profile list display, even when only one profile) Start Tb with "thunderbird.exe -P", and choose profile
Oh sorry, it's already clear that hang is before display of profile list. Ignore above my comment, please. Sorry for spam.
What happens when multiple(many) profiles exist? (Make it longer to complete works required before profile list display.) - Create two or more profiles additionally - Start Tb with "thunderbird.exe -P", with Readyboost enabled
To Sam Houston(bug openr): Can you get NSPR log for NSPR_LOG_MODULES=all:5 with DebugView? (Timestamp is added by DebugView. I'll help problem analysis.) (No physical file write by Tb. It'll reduce serialization among Tb's processes.) See Bug 86396 Comment #15 for getting DebugView. See Bug 86396 Comment #7 for rough procedure. Can you see difference between log of non-hang & log of hang? 1. Start DebugView with admin privilege, and start Capture 2. Set env variables > SET NSPR_LOG_MODULES=all:5 > SET NSPR_LOG_FILE=WinDebug 3. thunderbird.exe -P 4. When profile list is displayed or hang is detected, terminate or kill Tb 5. Save log data at DebugView
from OP: "problem is tied to the use of a USB device for readyboost with Vista Home Basic and with Vista Home Premium. Has occurred on new Dell & Toshiba notebooks. Only occurs if a USB device is configure for readyboost. But even then it is intermittent. Past that, someone else will have to carry on."
Bad news, good news. Bad news: Hang with Firefox recurred on the Toshiba without Readyboost running. First time this has been observed. Good news: Firefox 3 Beta 5 has not hung once on the same machine. Problem apparently solved in the Beta.
