On Leopard 10.5.1 (not tested with other versions of OS X) using 3.0b1 with the preview theme, the throbber doesn't spin smoothly when loading a page. Instead, it can be seen jumping back and forth, stopping sometimes and often flickering. I suspect that the throbber has an incorrect number of frames, causing the bug.
This appears to have changed in the current trunk: the throbber now moves at the right speed, but it still appears to jump back to the first frame every once a while, most likely when a new page item is being loaded. The problem is definitely NOT frame number, however.
