Any page (this included) where t is followed by s (e.g. most), the s disappears
leaving a visual 'mot' Even typing it is the same. AS soon as the t is finished,
the s disappears. Font change makes no difference.

Copy the text and paste into another application and the s 'reappears'.

Weird, and very annoying.  

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. visit http://www.taskjuggler.org/manual-git/specifying_the_tasks.html
2.  search for  depends !deliveries.start  s.tart is seen by me.
3.
Actual Results:  
!deliveries.tart where the 't' is very slightly smaller than elsewhere.

Expected Results:  
I'd love to see the s.

seemingly only since I upgraded FC7 to FC8.

This is a bug in the GNU freefont package and not Firefox. See http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?16253 and http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=358526

It should be fixed in the latest release at http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/freefont/ or in whatever package manager you use.
