As per discussion in mozilla.dev.planning, I'd like to request creation of a newsgroup mirror of the Mozilla2-devel mailing list. I'd suggest making it moderated, like the email list is, but that's really up to the owners (whom I'm guessing around brendan and bsmedberg).

To my knowledge this list is brand new. It's probably not too late to move it outright to the news server if wanted. We do have the capability to set up moderated newsgroups. It's up to Brendan though, it's his list.
As the primary list moderator, I'd prefer to avoid two different moderations systems... if it's possible to have a single moderation system for both newsgroup and email posts, that's fine... otherwise I'd prefer a readonly newsgroup.
For our newsgroup gateways, moderated newsgroups are set up so that mailman is the moderator for the newsgroup. So any incoming messages for the newsgroup itself coming from nntp will wind up in the mailman moderator queue as well. Also, just for perspective, I had not yet read the thread on m.d.planning when I wrote comment 2. I see a variety of stuff mentioned there, and I'm open to whatever you guys want as long as we have the tech to make it happen. :)
What's happening with this bug? Are we going to get this gateway?
Dave: as per Benjamin's direction, could you please set up the newsgroup mirror to point to the same mailman moderation system as the list? The sooner we get that in place, the sooner we can stop hearing about this horrible crime against Mozilladom.
What are we using for a newsgroup name? Nobody's said that yet, and I can't do anything without one.
Options: - mozilla.dev.platform2 - mozilla.dev.mozilla2 - mozilla.dev.tech.mozilla2 Unless Mike or Brendan have strong opinions, I suggest mozilla.dev.platform2, because it's for the second version of our platform, and that makes the link reasonably with the "platform" group which this discussion would go in if it wasn't specific, high-volume and so on. Gerv
I don't agree that lack of a newsgroup mirror is a huge problem, but I think forcing the newsgroup name to be like existing group names is a mistake. This is a read-only mirror (read-mostly, if members can post -- detail). Its name should be different in some obvious way that suggests this difference. Also, Mozilla 2 is more than just platform. If the mail name is mozilla2-devel, the newsgroup name should not be *.platform2 or any such thing. Suggest mozilla.dev.mozilla2-devel-mirror, nice and long to test the mettle of onlookers who can't hack mailman's archive. Half a :-P. /be
I know, two mozilla substrings (one with a 2 after it) and dev+devel in a group name is just mean. If it's really in our interest to make a version "2" of existing groups such as m.d.platform, then we should rename the mailing list to follow the current derivation rule. Not that I want to rename the list! /be

Not that I want to rename the list! I think that "mozilla 2" has enough meaning to the target audience of this community that we should preserve it, and it also means that we can retire the list when we're on to mozilla 3. :)
As I understand it (AICBW), to make all the automatic stuff work, the list is going to have to move from @mozilla.org to @lists.mozilla.org. This can be done on the back-end, but it does mean that the name of the current mailing list isn't set in stone, and we don't have to make the new newsgroup name match it if we don't want to. I also think it would be better (although it may not be technically required) if list name corresponds to the newsgroup name in the way that all the existing lists do. If we want to keep mozilla2, and Brendan says it's more than just platform, I suggest the following: mozilla.dev.mozilla2 and therefore dev.mozilla2@lists.mozilla.org The fact that it's a read-only mirror will become obvious to people if and when they try and post to it :-) Gerv
yes, that's correct, it'll move to lists.mozilla.org and the name will be the newsgroup name without the "mozilla." on the front (and with remaining dots converted to hyphens). We can certainly put in a forward so the old address still works.
And how does the read-mostly newsgroup access work? Or did I misunderstand, and no one can post to the group, but subscribers can send as usual? /be
Posts to the newsgroup are routed to mailman's moderation queue.
Benjamin, you ok with a possibly-much-higher moderation workload? /be
I can be ruthless, sure.
Let me know when the newsgroup is created and how it is named so that I could subscribe. (It's a new year already, were there any progress in 'fixing' this 'bug'?..)
(In reply to comment #12) > mozilla.dev.mozilla2 > dev.mozilla2@lists.mozilla.org I'm good with this, thanks for the suggestions. (In reply to comment #13) > We can certainly put in a forward so the old address still works. Thanks, let's do that -- make computers work harder, not people. Go justdave! /be
This seems to have stalled... Brendan: now that Mozilla2 is the trunk, is Mozilla2 discussion going to migrate to the standard groups? Or is the list still active? Gerv
Reassigning to justdave, who is the person actually able to fix this (assuming the group is still active). Gerv

It's been like 8 months since this was requested, and as Gerv notes in comment 20, times have changed... do we still want this? Reassign back to me if you do and I'll make it happen.

We don't need the list or this bug any more. Yay! /be
