happened when i tried to add a rss feed (quality.mozilla.org) to the bookmark toolbar

I'm guessing that's Places rather than Preview - are these your missing STR?

1. Have the default pref to show a preview page for feeds
2. Load http://quality.mozilla.org/
3. Click the feed icon in the addressbar
4. On the preview page, leave the dropdown on Live Bookmarks, click Subscribe Now
5. In the dialog that comes up, change from Bookmarks Menu to Bookmarks Toolbar, click Add
---- at this point the error message appears ----
6. The live bookmark (is|is not) added

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body   contains   places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
