User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b1) Gecko/2007110904 Firefox/3.0b1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b1) Gecko/2007110904 Firefox/3.0b1
I usually initiate a web browsing session by searching for something. Historically, I've done this by clicking on the search tool bar and searching on Google or similar.
Of course, the new FF homepage makes the extra click to the toolbar unnecessary. However, I noticed that if I click on the toolbar, "Google" gets selected (the text) yet the input focus is still on the search box in the page.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Firefox "fresh" (3.0 beta 1), ensuring the default homepage loads
2.Click on the search toolbar: instead of clearing the grey Google text, it is selected
3.Type something
Actual Results:
Text entered goes in the home page search box, rather than in the toolbar search box which was the most recently clicked-on thing (it should have input focus). Furthermore, "Google" is selected, when it typically should clear out and let you type.
Expected Results:
Text entered should go into search toolbar, and Google text should vanish rather than being selected.
OK, clarifying: to make this bug appear, you need to click on the tool bar *just below* the text field, when the pointer is still in the field, but the icon is no longer the caret/I-Beam cursor.
Ordinarily, clicking like this does nothing. Against the home page, freshly started, it selects the grey Google text then fails to actually shift focus (apparently not truly registering as a click).
*wishes for an edit button*
This bug persists across all pages, not just the home page.
However, once the search toolbar is "correctly" clicked, the bug cannot be triggered again.

Not sure what you mean. When I click on the toolbar but below the search bar input field, nothing happens; the caret is still blinking in the google website input.
Can you test this with the latest trunk nightly build? And the preferably with a new profile or in safe-mode.

Bug 408060 sounds related some way.
Bug doesn't manifest in latest nightly, so I take it it's been fixed somehow.
