each time i log on the odd pop up comes selling telephones/life insurance etc about every 10 mins and the firefox emblam appears at the time it appears.

This is not a problem in Firefox. You computer might somehow have been affected by a virus or a spyware program. I recommend that you install and run a spyware remove program and an anti-virus scanner.
