there seem to be an issue between the Firefox integrated download manager and the user temp folder in Windows:

I get the error message that:
C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Temp\*.* could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred

Try saving to a different location.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.launch a download link using Mozilla integrated download manager
2.
3.
Actual Results:
I get the error message that:
C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Temp\*.* could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred

I've been posting recently in a non-Mozilla related forum where other users have the same issue. And that's new, most likely a browser vulnerability and not a setup issue, or an access problem to the temp folder. A similar issue has been reported here a while ago, with no solution it seems:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331544

In my case, I just have to relaunch the download to get it work normally, but others are stuck and can't get out of it.
thanks steve, I'm gonna try that.
OK I've tried the resetting of the values in about:config, did a couple of new downloads and no problem at all. But I'd like to leave that bug as unfixed for a couple of days, just to make sure it doesn't happen again. I'll come back to the thread, let's say in two days to mark the bug as fixed in that case.
OK, but please don't forget, and please mark the bug WORKSFORME (We use FIXED only when a bug is fixed with new code)
Version: unspecified → 2.0 Branch
Also note that this isn't really a permanent fix; the old download manager code in Firefox 2, which uses RDF, seems to be more error-prone to corruption than is our new (Firefox 3) SQLite format.

OK no problem. I would actually switch to FF 3 beta 2 now if it was not for extentions compatibility issues.

OK since I've had no issue again downloading files, I'll change the status of this bug to "worksforme". Other users who experienced the same problem and couldn't fix it the way it is described in this thread chose to switch to FF3 beta 2 where the issue doesn't seem to exist. I'll stick to FF 2.0.0.11 until more extensions become compatible with Firefox 3, it's too many of them not working yet.
