Rather than having a handful of static categories for classifying addons, it would be very convenient to have a folksonomy set up that could be searched. For example, if I'm looking for a dark theme, it could be anywhere in the current categories. I would be limited to searching for the word dark in authors' theme descriptions. However, a tagging option would allow users to classify the themes themselves, making it easy to find specific kinds: "blue," "minimal," "Christmas," etc.
There used to be a page for cataloging extensions by function, so if there are two extensions that provided the same functionality, it is easier to compare and use the one you want:

I think the best way to implement this on the new system is to tag each extension with their functions, so that all the extensions that perform a certain function can be shown on one page for comparison.
My extension implements quite a wide range of functionality, and is slowly increasing that range too. Just searching based on its name is unlikely to cause many people who are interested in those features to find it. How about allowing extension authors to associate up to 20 'keywords' with their extension, which will match in an AMO search as if they were in the name of the extension? This would have to be approved by an AMO editor.
I'd like to see unauthenticated, user-initiated free-form tagging, but facet-based tagging ala debtags would be nice too.
Hi, this bug appears to have slipped off the radar but this will soon be implemented:

Filed bugs: bug 488516 bug 488517 bug 488519 bug 488520

This will be done this summer.
No longer blocks: 488516, 488517, 488519, 488520
Depends on: 488516, 488517, 488519, 488520
This is fixed now -- unless Wil disagrees, in which case he's welcome to reopen.
