We're going to have a Marathi localization for Firefox 2. Sandeep, Priti, do you have any suggestions on changes to the list of search engines, or the Feed readers? What would be a good news feed for Marathi? http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines is giving some rationale, most of which should easily apply for Firefox 2 as well. I guess we should be able to reuse some of our experience from other Indian languages, i.e., yahoo.in and ebay.in, and stick to amazon.com. I think that http://mr.wikipedia.org/ is good, too, it has some 15000 articles. Mic, any ideas on your side?
for Live Bookmark (RSS Feed) we've been using language based news aggregators. there may be something from these set of links we can use (I can't read the language so can you take a look and let me know if any of these maybe a useful feed) http://in.ourcity.yahoo.com/pune/marathi also i found this feed link: http://reader.feedshow.com/show_items-feed=34b12516d82c367a44af84732d083c08 for search engine's we can use the list we've built for Hindi or Bengali - are there search engine's that have been built in the Marathi language? here's what I've found thus far: http://www.cfilt.iitb.ac.in/marathisearchengine/index.html http://www.marathimati.com/websuchi/categories.asp?catid=116 http://www.marathiworld.com/ maybe there's something in one of those that would be useful to include? RSS Readers - this is more difficult - I'm hoping you may know of some Marathi readers that are available? if not maybe there's a next best major language we can use? e.g., english or another? finally, can you guys update your team pages: http://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Localization_Teams#Marathi_.28mr-IN.29 thanks
Fixed the wiki myself. http://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Localization_Teams#Marathi_.28mr.2C_mr-IN.29 is the right link now.
So, right now, browser/chrome/browser-region.properties is in a bad shape, it contains a bunch of translated strings which should be localized instead of translated. I.e., Google and Yahoo as browser.search.order refer to search plugin short names, and thus need to match those. The best way to start this off is to revert the mr version of region.properties to the en-US version, and to then make changes as agreed upon here. For those, we'll need to create patches, attach those to this bug and get them reviewed, most likely by me. Sandeep, Priti, any comments on what Mic layed out in comment 1 on how to proceed?
With respect to comment#1 A) For Live Bookmark (RSS Feed) since we've been using language based news aggregators. Thereby, (Useful): 1) http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/ (demonstrates dynamic, changing and relevant content--also widely read newspaper in Marathi language--users interest and is locally relevant) 2) http://www.esakal.com/ (this too demonstrates dynamic, changing and relevant content--also widely read newspaper in Marathi language) (Not useful): http://in.ourcity.yahoo.com/pune/marathi (doesn't demonstrate dynamic, changing and relevant content) http://reader.feedshow.com/show_items-feed=34b12516d82c367a44af84732d083c08 (only demonstrates Marathi Literature content) B) For search engine: (Not useful) http://www.cfilt.iitb.ac.in/marathisearchengine/index.html (doesn't work) http://www.marathimati.com/websuchi/categories.asp?catid=116 (has font issues in displaying Marathi) http://www.marathiworld.com/ (its popular but has font issues in displaying Marathi) (Useful) Global Search--http://www.google.co.in/intl/mr/ Specific Interest-mr.wikipedia.org (ok but not matured yet) Did not find matured search engines in Marathi. Others that are popularly used are:yahoo, ebay, rediff and wikipedia C) For RSS readers: Did not find any Marathi RSS reader.
sandeep, thanks so much for validating current Marathi options. we can use either of the suggestions you make for a Live Bookmark. I've checked both sites and they both seem to have good user experience. Do you or your community have a preference? let's choose one and contact them for permission for search - ok on Google, yaho, ebay, rediff and wikipedia. We've had permission from Rediff in another language so I don't foresee any issues for Marathi. I'll inform them and gather any specific search parameters. We should keep Creative Commons as Mozilla supports them generally due to their open source approach and we'd like to support what they do. ok by you? RSS readers I guess we will go with default. I have found Netvibes has more languages than the others so that might be an option. LMK what you think
Hi Mic, Wrt to comment #5 A) For Live Bookmark: http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/ B) For search: I Agree with your suggestion. OK from my side. C) For RSS reader: I Agree with your suggestion.
ok by me for (a) we need their permission. from irc chat i understand sandeep will contact maharstratimes for permission and forward me their answer please. thanks
we found out netvibes doesn't ship in Marathi yet, so en-US defaults will be ok. also about comment #7, you can post their permission in this bug when you get it too :)
We'll need a patch here to implement: yahoo.in eBay.in mr.wikipedia.org. For wikipedia, please use the template from http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins/wikipedia.xml, and fill in the right URLs. The ShortName should be "Wikipedia (mr)", to match with the site.
Whiteboard: needs-mic → needs-mic, needs-patch
Sandeep landed a wikipedia-mr.xml, but that has line numbers checked in, and will not work. We should fix that as part of a follow-up patch.
Created attachment 315972 [details] [diff] [review] patch for wikipedia-mr.xml

Comment on attachment 315972 [details] [diff] [review] patch for wikipedia-mr.xml That's a good start, there will be more patches to do, but let's practice with the simple ones. Please land this patch with a check-in comment referencing this bug and my review, describing the change, something like "bug 410783, fix copy-and-paste error, email@example.com" would do.
Attachment #315972 - Flags: review?(l10n) → review+
bug 410783, copy-and-paste error fixed, firstname.lastname@example.org, landed wikipedia (mr) plugin to match site.
Hrm. Why did you put the good check-in comment in the bug, and a not-so-useful one in the check-in?
Sorry, Won't repeat it next time. As of now, i forced cvs commit to new revision without making any changes in wikipedia-mr.xml file.
Do we have permission to use the Maharashtra Times feed by now?
Created attachment 327138 [details] [diff] [review] fix remaining search and region.properties issues I'll land this patch for you guys, adding rediff, changing ebay and yahoo to india, and fix up a remaining issue with the title of the wikipedia plugin. That had to be added to list.txt, too. I neither removed answers nor amazon, I wasn't really sure what the conclusion here in the bug was on that. For search order and RSS readers, I'm reverting to en-US defaults, as discussed in the bug.

hi per comment #17. to be clear the final search list will be (Sandeep please confirm you are ok with this) Google (geotargetted redirects on their side) Yahoo (from India) Amazon.com creative commons eBay (from India) rediff (from India) wikipedia (marathi)
per comment #7 - did you receive anything from Maharashtra Times? i'm also going to try myself today to move this along
As per comment #19 - I am ok with the final search list.
As per comment #20 - As of now (Asia/Calcutta: 2008-06-30 12:28:51), I have recieved no response from Maharashtra Times (June 28,2008 and June 29,2008 was a non-working day here). Should we wait for couple of days more ?
i have received an email and copied you on it now sandeep. they would like more information from us as to how the feed is used. i have emailed them more detail and included a screen shot. i hope that will help. they have asked we not proceed until they understand more. Sandeep would you mind trying the two contact names and phone numbers in the email. I have tried to reach them by phone unsuccessfully. I can also try again my time tonight your time tomorrow morning.
