oddly i didn't get a frowny face.

kick messsages arent processed by the munger, the don't do smileys, bold,
underline, or links at the moment.  Even if they did, I don't think (:-() would
match as a smiley because it isn't surrounded by spaces.

What does any of this have to with the bug summary?

Now an explanation of what I wanted:
in timely's log a kick shows up as from channel #kicktoy [the-kick-message]
in chatzilla's log it's (the-kick-message)  I don't thing ()'s should be the 
default, but if they are I would like an easy way to change it.  Similarly 
someone might want to see the ip of the kicky or kicker.

A reminder, kick messages often include faces, I really like the idea of 
converting faces even here. BUT using ()'s to wrap text in display can confuse 
the faces.
You were confused by (:-() but that was because you thought I was kicked with 
that face, I was kicked with :-(
