(Whiteboard: closeme 2009-3-15 [need log])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11
Build Identifier: 2.0.0.9 (20071031)
Email messages suddenly not downloading on my one PC. Nothing has changed since the program WAS successfully downloading massages. My home PC with all the exact same configs is downloading the messages fine, and I have been using this dual Thunderbird config for at least 2 months with no problems. Of course messages are "Left on server" so they can both download.
There should be no problem with size since I have my own hosting and have plenty of space, nor do I have emails with huge attachments. I even cleared out my mail on the server by mistake a month ago, so there is no overload there either.
So when I now click on "Get Mail," at the bottom it states "Connecting to.... etc..." and again there are no problems with the settings. Then it goes to the message "Downloading message 1 of 74" and then the message disappears in less than half a second and then nothing happens.
This may be unrelated, but in just in case, I tried compacting the inbox folder, and it went about a little process and then it wiped out all my stored emails in my inbox folder. They are not in trash either, totally gone.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it never really gets rid of my settings. I have gone through deleting every string with "thunder" in it in the registry and computer system files, unless I am missing some other string I should be deleting. I use Firefox so I didnt want to delete everything with Mozilla.
Any Ideas?
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open TB
2. Auto or Get Mail
3. [ No message downloaded ]
Actual Results:
No message downloaded

To get rid of all your mail and settings, remove your profile folder. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder
If the problem doesn't turn out to be related to antivirus/firewall, get a protocol log to check what's happening.

Thunderbird stopped downloading mail more than 10 days ago. When I click get mail nothing happens. When I check to see if there is mail on the server the message is that there are no new messages. However, I have a friend to send me emails and they never arrive and do not bounce back to him. I had been receiving about 100 emails a day and I know that they did not stop. So where are my emails going?

Have you tried mailing yourself? The protocol log (comment 2) would also help determine the cause.
If you have web mail access to the account, can you verify that there are new messages? Of course there is always the possibility your ISP messed something up.
I sent a message thru my Yahoo account and another from an account with the same ISP as I use with Thunderbird. Neither came through. I have no trouble with either of the other 2 emails for receiving or sending emails. Since I always received at least 100 emails a day before they suddenly just stopped coming in, I am certain that I would be receiving some emails every day. The date I last received any emails was 1/17/08. I really don't want to wipe out the emails I had received previously as there are some I need to refer back to.
I do remove my profile and reinstall TB, but I save my profile in a folder to my desktop renamed something different. Would that affect TB resetting totally? Is it scanning my whole PC for the presence of my old profile data and uses it for the reinstall? I only save my mail folder, nothing else, so I figured that wouldnt be the cause. Or else how do you suggest I backup my mail files? A network folder safer? Or do I have to save to an external source like a flash or cd?

It doesn't look for the profile in other places, if you move the complete profile to somewhere else you've got a clean install. (And I suggest move all of the profile, not just the mail - at least as a second step.)
Later it's also safe to move the mail folders into the new profile and they should get picked up.
So then how could the new install of TB find my old mail profile? I evenm deleted everything out of the registry! Ie., when I reload the newly installed TB, it reloads WITH all my old inbox nad sent mail, etc!

It wouldn't. Sure you removed the *profile* dir (not the program install dir). The one to (re)move would be something like C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows user name>\Application Data\Thunderbird\
UH Duh? everything named Mozilla or Thunderbird was found with windows search Dog (note: find hiden files was even checked the 2nd time i did it) and then moved to a C:\emails-Saved folder as far as profiles and etc that contained emails i needed to save. then Thunderbird was uninstalled all uninstalled related files deleted then a registry cleanup was done with both Norton and Systems Mechanic then Thunderbird reinstalled. I still cannot download my emails. I have checked all my firewall settings and internet security and Antivirus settings all settings giving Thunderbird full internet access but still have a receiveing problem. Can send emails ok just can't receive them.
Only with Thunderbird do I have this problem. DUH? so now what do you suggest??? I have another email account on this same server that i am useing Outlook Express to access with no problems at all. So do not think it is server related. So Now what do you suggest??

If you haven't *disabled* antivirus and firewall, try that first. I also recall some incident where the firewall had to be uninstalled - but I don't think that's common.
Then create pop3 protocol log for analysis: http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#pop

I also tried uninstalling everything, then going thru creating a new profile, etc... still not downloading. I am in a network firewall so I doubt I can get IT to disable that for me... anything else I can do besides that? Again this same prgram/mail server works perfectly at home, so it may very well be a new update to our network firewall/av software, but if IT cant do anything, that means I cant use TB here???

Anybody's guess without the protocol log. (Which isn't hard to create, see comment 10.)

I am having exactly the same problem, mail that used to appear fine suddenly stopped, 8 other accounts using same ISP, ports, etc. still work fine. I finally removed the account and set it up again, still does same - logs in, reports number of messages, they never appear. All messages appear in webmail, so they are sitting in server.

After trying everything without success, I decided on a temporary solution.
Since I maintain my own websites with mail servers, I redirected the offending address temporarily to another working email address in Tbird. Then I cleaned up the messages on webmail and forwarded the ones I wanted to keep from the server, deleted the rest. Then, just to be sure, I asked Tbird to download from the bad address one more time - and everything on the server came thru!!
Then I went back to my web server mnaintenance and took off the redirect. Next I sent a test message from another mailbox to the questionable one and it worked fine! Strange.
I have no idea why redirecting briefly would have any effect.

If nothing changed then there's even odds that the problem is not Thunderbird, especially if Thunderbird didn't update between when it worked and when it didn't. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/New_messages_do_not_appear and the rest of the kb articles.
