The new privacy icon in Options looks like it is wearing a helmet.
Cap of invisibility: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_of_invisibility
"[...] In Greek mythology, the Cap of Invisibility (aidos kyneê in Greek) is a mysterious helmet or cap that possesses the ability to turn the wearer invisible.[1] Also known as the Cap of Hades or Helm of Hades [...]"
Interesting but our privacy setting make us no where near invisible (anonymous) on the internet :/

But it way, the icon makes sense now but I foresee a lot of other people not understanding this icon.

;-) I was rather reminded of work-site protection (of your brain -> your data?), when it's really just supposed to be a hotel accessory... FWIW: The Linux and OS X versions are far clearer (both better than Firefox 2.0's icon).
Yeah, we are not quite there yet on windows with this icon being recognizable. Going to keep working on it. Do people in general think the linux one is ok?

At the risk of painting a bike shed, I think the door-handle is unnecessary and the “do not enter” disc would be clearer if it were red. It *is* “OK”, though.

Agreed.

Summary: Privacy icon looks like its wearing a helmet → Privacy icon looks like it's wearing a helmet
I think a melding of the Linux and OS X privacy icons would look best, i.e. keep the simple door-handle of the Linux version (the OS X icon seems a bit confusing at first because if you haven't seen the icons for the other platform, a hotel door-hanger doesn't immediately come to mind) but make the no-entry symbol red, like the OS X version. (By the way, I'm a Vista user.)

In fact, I have to say that I think the Linux Main, Tabs and Security prefpane icons look better than the Vista ones, too.
This shows the privacy icons on each platform as they will be for Beta 4 (including the new Windows icons that Alex linked to from bug 414389).

I have to say I still think the door handle is over-complicated on the Windows icons (although I'm glad to see the no-entry symbol, and in red), so it also shows what I think the Windows privacy icons should look like, which as I said before, is the Linux icon but with the no-entry symbol in red, rather than grey. (I couldn't get the no-entry symbol quite the right shape and size, though.)

We are going to get a whole new privacy icon for 3.1, since we are introducing a lot of privacy related features.

This bug's priority relative to the set of other polish bugs is:
P3 - Polish issue that is in a secondary interface, occasionally encountered, or is not easily identifiable.

Secondary UI, and I still contend that it looked more like a door knob than a helmet, but it's probably one of those "once you see it you can't un-see it" things.
