Details

If you select a URL in a mail message, the throbber on the mail window will start to move instead of the throbber in the browser window that will display the page. Tested on Linux build 2000060508.

this is correct behavior. We start to load the url in the mail window until we determine the content type. When we determine that it's a content type mail shouldn't handle then we hand it over to the browser window.
