The Smart bookmarks entries are not translated along with the rest of the Firefox UI when one changes from one localized build to another.

This is a problem as there is no way to create a new smart bookmarks entry (bug 399984) and there's no way to edit the smart bookmark entries (like other bookmarks). So, if the first places build you've tried has been in a foreign locale (say en-US), you're stuck with en-US smart bookmarks even when you move to a localized build.
i don't actually know if someone in the UI team has come into this problem, i actually saw that moving from EN-US to an italian build. probably not blocking but that's not good for translation.

Probably not really blocking but someone should probably notice this before the final (add a relnote?)

reporter, Marco. I imagine this is a won't fix for such an edge case situation that will affect very few people. Besides, since all this stuff is in your profile, there is a workaround to the situation. In your Italian build with the en-US default set. Go to the Library and export your bookmarks. Then shutdown and delete the Firefox profile folder. Start up Firefox, then import the bookmarks that you exported. You'll end up with an Italian version of the default set and an en-US one as a sub folder of your Menu Segnalibri. The bookmarks you want are there. They just need to be moved to where you'd like them to live. That's a blunt method. There's probably a neater method by saving, cutting and pasting other files (for example places.sqlite), if you want to preserve your history, passwords, etc.
This will not block the final release of Firefox 3.

Regarding this being an edge case: true for the most part, but this will affect situations where UI is translated with a language pack or different languages are used on separate sessions (on the same profile). It's not obvious to me, what kind of amounts of users are we talking about here. There's probably no reliable stats about this either.

A side effect: Possibly the largest group of users affected by this are Linux users who use a package manager to install Fx. E.g. Ubuntu translates the UI with a language pack and this will result in en-US smart bookmarks entry.
It would have been nice if we had had a chance to come up with something better for localizing bookmarks for Firefox 3, but we didn't, so we'll be stuck with the problems we had in the years before. See bug 375067, too.
Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
