It would be convenient if a message thread automatically expanded when clicking on the root message. The way I use Thunderbird, I always click on the root message to view it and then expand the thread by clicking the "+" so I can see how many messages are in the thread and where I am. It'd be nice if those two clicks were consolidated into one. I don't know if other people would find this irritating (unlikely?); if so, it could default to not do it.

This also raises the question of whether other threads that were opened by this method should be automatically collapsed when a new thread is selected.

It seems like this would be a good candidate for an extension, too, but I didn't find anything that does it.

Yup, something like bug 109742 would be nice.

I don't think this and 109742 are duplicates. I would like to auto-expand any thread where I click on the root message, but that one seems to relate to expanding all new (unread?) threads automatically. Should I re-open this?
Ah, yes..

Summary: Auto-expand message thread → Auto-expand message thread when clicking the root message
Confirming.

Ever confirmed: true

We're building a new conversation view into core, which will make the need of interacting with the thread pane less needed as unread message will be expanded and focused automatically in the conversation pane.
Also, autoexpanding the thread on selection is not good UX in general.
