Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20071008 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20071008 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.6

When the user clicks on the RSS icon in the address toolbar, it presents an option to use an application for the RSS subscription. It does not however, list any available applications, and assumes that the user knows the path and name of their feedreader executable. Further more, it does not seem to accept any arguments, since spaces are automatically converted to "%20" in the command line.

Ideally, the application chooser should check which applications are available in your GNOME/KDE/Windows/OSX session, and know how to deal with most of the popular feed readers available.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Visit a site with an RSS feed (such as http://planet.ubuntu.com)
2. Click on the feed icon in the address toolbar
3. Choose "Choose Application" from the dropdown list
Actual Results:
A user is presented with a file-opener dialog.

Expected Results:
A list of available feed readers.
Seems like an Ubuntu-only problem, as this WFM. asac, any ideas?

i think he doesn't claim that the entries for "bloglines" et al are missing, but that there is no desktop application like "liferea-add-feed" in that drop down list.

This could be achieved through mapping applications by mime-type. Anyway, for the time being there are no applications explicitly registered for the application/rss+xml mime-type in ubuntu gnome database afaict.

You can also use Launchy (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/81) to have Firefox to push the URI to a desktop application.

I think this is invalid - firefox is looking at the database of mime times, and finding nothing - which is the correct behaviour - as that database has no appropriate entries.
Adding to mime-types in hte ubuntu db would seem the correct solution (if not done by now)

Doing anything else would be broken.
