User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b3) Gecko/2008020514 Firefox/3.0b3 Windows XP SP2, Firefox 3 Beta 3 English. Browser window text renders as symbols for elements whose Windows font settings is set to a Type 1 font. I originally installed FF3 while I had FuturaMedium, a Type 1 font, set for many Windows elements (set via the Display control panel applet). I've been using this setting for a very long time and it's never given me any trouble in any program, including Firefox 2. Firefox 3 was giving me nothing but symbols where that font was supposed to show up. See http://www.bitzearch.com/sample.jpg for a screeshot. I've since tried other fonts based on a forum suggestion and found that the same problem occurs with other Type 1 fonts, but not with other font types. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Appearence -> Advanced 2.Choose a Type 1 font for the Menu item 3.Open Firefox 3 Actual Results: Firefox 3 browser window displays unreadable lines of symbols in place of menu names and expanded menu items. Expected Results: Displayed readable menu names and items.
Could be the same as bug 396315 (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=396315), which is a page rendering issue, rather than an issue of fonts rendering in window elements. Someone may want to merge the two if they are actually the same issue.

I decided to undupe this even though it is obviously the same issue. Although the other bug is still not marked fixed, it's testcase now passes. Set a dependency instead.

Except, rather oddly, I am also unable to duplicate the issue in this bug either.
That's strange. I just tried a few other fonts and made sure to start Firefox in safe mode, just to be sure it's not a theme or extension issue, and I still get the bug consistently.

Actually not so strange. Turns out the Futura medium font you originally posted on the forums about is not a type 1 font on my system. Guess I should have checked. I do see this issue with type 1 fonts.

This issue is at least similar to that described in bug 396315. However, the patch checked in there has no effect on this issue.

I have had the same issue from FF beta 1 through to now; my OS is Windows Vista. My particular problem was with setting Type 1 Helvetica as my UI font.
Summary: Browser window renders Type 1 fonts as symbols if chosen as the Windows font for menus and other window text. → Browser window UI elements render Type 1 fonts as symbols.
This is essentially bug 396315. At this point, I think we're going to disable Type 1 fonts entirely, but that'll be up to Stuart. Bouncing over to him to decide one way or the other.

What would "disabling" Type 1 fonts mean for those who have a Type 1 font set as their font for window elements? Would Firefox default to a different font for those elements, or what?

I am having the exact same problem as posted by Hillel Aftel except that the problem remains regardless of which font I am using, Type 1 or otherwise. I get the garbled menus and buttons, etc., all the time. Running on Windows XP Home with SP2 English, Firefox 3 beta 3 English. FYI, I had the same problem with FF 3 Beta 2 also.

Running on Windows XP Home with SP2 English, Firefox 3 beta 4 English. I installed Firefox 3 Beta 4 and experimented with all sorts of fonts and colors for about 2 hours. I can report partial success. Except as noted below, the non Type 1 fonts are now working normally. I am using Arial as my FF Font. I also set that as my Windows system font. However, no matter what font I set anywhere, all tooltips in Firefox are garbled. In addition, in all Firefox dialog windows the button text is all garbled, i.e. OK, Cancel, Help are garbled. In sum, Type 1 fonts cannot be used. Non-Type 1 fonts work well except on all tooltips and all buttons on FF dialog windows. On those elements, nothing seems to work.

Non Type-1 fonts worked fine for me in FF3 beta 3. Haven't tried beta 4 yet.

I found the problem. My system still had some Type 1 fonts as the default. Once I changed the whole system to non-Type 1 fonts FF 3 Beta 4 worked fine. I sure hope this can be rectified because I really don't wish to use only non-Type 1 fonts in my entire system just to accommodate FF. Good look, folks. Hope you fix it soon. Thanks.
