There is this particular character which is rendered as a square box containing the code "FFFD".

This is very common for chineese chars etc when you don't have a good font, but I have seen this particular character show up in the middle of normal english text. It's usually used where a ' character or something like that would be expected.
Check out the screenshot I have attached to see what the problem is.

This character looks bad on FF 2.0.0.12 as well though, hmm...
It's used in place of ' when you use "smart quotes" and it's not using a font that supports them. Ditto the "smart" versions of "".
Marking invalid. I think this may also happen if people try to paste in "smart quotes" from a word processing program into a poorly programmed editor rather than using the “construction.
