If I could programme I would do this myself! Is there a way to get a Google Talk Add-on for Thunderbird, so it opens up in one application? Or is this a waste of time and I should just run both applications separately? I've seen a web-based e-mail client that does this, with a text box, friends, etc in the bottom left of the screen, under the folders. Just a thought.

That's not the responsibility of Mozilla. It should be Google's task, or some other developer.
There are several solutions, but most involve Firefox, or another webbrowser :
- you can access Google-talk from your webbrower, if you have a gmail-account
- Google has a gadget that you can place on your Google homepage, if you have one : <http://googletalk.blogspot.com/2007/03/google-talk-gadget.html>
- someone loaded this gadget in a Firefox sidebar : <http://labnol.blogspot.com/2007/03/run-google-talk-in-firefox-sidebar.html>
- there's an extension that packs it as an extension : <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4708>
- normally, you should be able to install that same extension inside Thunderbird (I saved it on my desktop, then used Tools-Add-ons->Install in Thunderbird), but it complains to me that it is not compatible with Thunderbird. Probably because there's no sidebar in Thunderbird.
- there's a Thunderbird extension that claims to be compatible with googletalk, but I haven't tried it : <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/3633>
