We switched many of our clients to FireFox as their default browser over the past several years. Many businesses ask us to block file downloads for all or some specific users, but unfortunately FireFox has no such settings. Internet Explorer on the other hand allows does allow allow disabling of file downloads - within Internet and/or Intranet zones. Add the fact that these same settings are available in Active Directory and one ends up with a very powerful tool to better secure corporate networks against improper file downloads. FireFox could be enhanced to go even further than IE if it allowed a list of file extensions to allow or forbid. Yes, other hardware or software solutions exist that could easily handle the task of preventing all/some file downloads, but not with the granularity and easy of Active Directory... Oh, can this be a 2nd enhancement request too? - to provide Active Directory templates for FireFox so administrators can easily deploy and control use of the software? Please file a separate issue for the 2nd request. Disabling downloads is something worth considering.

We now respect the Windows security settings for downloads, so the zones stuff should apply...
Are you saying FireFox now respects the standard Internet Explorer group policy settings? In what version of FireFox did/does this feature get added? Any chance there could be an enhancement to restrict based on the file extension? e.g. .PDFs are generally safe, .VBS not so safe...
Since Firefox 3, we have supported this behaviour on XP SP2 and up.
