mA I had a similar problem with 1.5.4. I figured somebody got sloppy with a file handle and specified that something was to open read-write instead of read-only. I set the properties on Camino to read-write for all users of the computer, and it began working again. With 1.5.5 it doesn't work at all. It DID work with 1.5.3 without any funky permissions. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Camino. 2. Create a user who does not have administrator privileges. 3. Login as that user. 4. Run Camino. 5. Crash!!! Actual Results: See "details" Expected Results: It start up instead of crashing. As noted in details, with 1.5.4 it would work, but only if you manually set the permissions to read-write for all users. With 1.5.5 it doesn't work at all. It should work even with read-only permissions. The program should be able to keep all things that need read-write access in /tmp or the user's home directory. Giving my kids admin access to the machine is NOT an acceptable work around, so effectively Camino just doesn't work at all at the moment.
I'm not sure that admin privileges are really the cause here, but this does look a lot like bug 380015 (which in turn looks like it could be bug 292549).
Have you tried launching Camino with a fresh profile in those accounts (you can use http://pimpmycamino.com/parts/troubleshoot-camino to automate this)? The log doesn't really indicate anything that would be related to admin-vs-non-admin accounts; it looks like a web-content crash. Does 1.6b2 or a current nightly also crash in those accounts? Also, in the future, can you please 1) Report the bug using the copy of Camino that's causing the problem 2) Attach the crash log as a plain-text attachment after filing the bug instead of pasting it into the comments; it makes the bug and the log both easier to read. Your description only mentions one specific, existing account. Similarly, have you tried making a new admin account, and verifying that it does work? The summary of this bug is much more general than the description; I'd like to make sure that general statement has been tested.
Smokey: I chose to use my Linux machine because Camino wasn't working in the account I was logged in as. As I was studying the problem, and the problem is that Camino wouldn't start, using Camino to submit the bug was slightly problematic. Stuart: When I posted this, NO, I hadn't tried it from a new account. I HAD tried it from two existing non-admin accounts with the same results. It's a very reasonable request though. I just created a new non-admin account and logged in. I launch Camino. It starts to come up. I get the "would you like to make Camino your default browser" dialog and then *poof* it crashes. I've captured the output and saved it to a file. I'll attach it shortly. So yes, this happens across the board. I'll grant that it may be specific to my machine (though I have no idea why -- it's a stock machine running Tiger), but it is a general behavior, rather than being specific to a single account.
This is from the very first launch of Camino under a newly created non-admin account.
In reviewing my post I realized there was another question Stuart asked. Had I tried another Admin account? I had. I have two on the machine it works on both. But just to be thorough, I created yet another Admin account. Camino works. I turned on Admin permissions on the new test account (see above). Camino works. I turned off Admin permissions. Camino stops working. On my machine, running Tiger (10.4.11), Camino will not function unless the user has Admin privileges. One last note: One poster on mozillazine.org suggested using TroubleShoot Camino to launch Camino. Behavior is consistent: Admin accounts work, non-Admin accounts don't.
Thanks for verifying that. I'm definitely unable to reproduce this on my Tiger machine. A few more things to try (for the non-admin accounts): - Does Camino 1.6b2 work? - If you re-download 1.5.5, and run it from the disk image, does it work? - Does Firefox 2.0.0.12 work?
Michael, in addition to what Stuart asked in comment 7, if Camino 1.6b2 still crashes (which, talking to Sam, I expect it will), can you download the latest branch nightly from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/camino/nightly/latest-1.6-M1.8/ and attach a crash log from the nightly? Camino versions < 1.6b3 will have a symbol-stripping issue, and the offsets in your crash report are high enough to make me suspicious that there could be stripping+next-closest-symbol going on here.
Have you had a chance to try the tests in comment 7 and 8?
