This is very useful since often people (especially in UNIX community) don't like messages with lines over 80 columns.
Too long lines often get wrapped in unpleasant manner.

And for users who don't care this indicator will mean nothing.

It's wrapped at 80 (or your setting) anyway when sending, so I don't see why you would need it, for that purpose. Manually inserting all those line breaks sounds terrible!

If you just type the plain text there is no problem.
But when I place some tables, or some more structured text automatic
wrapping can mess the text up badly.

Or even better function can be implemented: force wrapping to the set maximum number of columns when I type the text.

Or another suggestion: have a "preview" function before sending showing what the message will look like after it's wrapped. Like Google does in a "preview" function when you post the Google Groups.

And BTW "Wrap plain text messages at XX characters" doesn't work for me at all.

That's how it works when you use the plain text composition window (ctrl click write, or set the pref). 

How the mail is sent is also affected by the mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed pref.
