See the test case. The background is missing just on the first of several identical SPANs.
In case it matters this is IceWeasel 2.0.0.12, I know this is not the stock
browser, but I assume it doesn't change the rendering engine.

The HTML parser is closing the first anchor element before the first nested one, closing the first span at the same time. You can check the parser behavior on Hixie's live dom viewer:
