When rolling the mouse over bookmarks, the url should be shown either as a
tooltip (like it's the case with the personal toolbar), or the url should be
shown in the status line, like in NS4

Yep, should appear in the status line of whatever component they are being 
accessed from. If from the Bookmarks window itself, then the status bar of the 
Bookmarks window. If from the Bookmarks menu of a browser window, then the 
status bar of the browser window. Etc.
I agree that it would be useful for this information to show up in some form,
but it's important to differentiate what behavior triggers a rollover and what
doesn't.  For example, in the bookmarks window, selecting a bookmark already
shows the URL in the status bar.  Changing that to a rollover would imply that a
single click would activate it, not select it.  Thus, it would be more useful to
do a tooltip when rolling over the URL column or something similar.

In menus, whichever bookmark you click (or release), you'll activate.  You also
don't want to draw tooltips in a menu, nor require a hover before displaying
information.  Thus, a rollover with text in the status bar would be appropriate.

The sidebar is a different case, in between the menu and the Bookmarks window.
The status bar in this case isn't necessarily associated with the sidebar
content and bookmarks are still selectable, requiring a double-click to
activate.  A tooltip might be appropriate.

Since these are all separate issues with separate solutions, I'd say they should
really be separate bugs.  I'm going to narrow this report to request that the
bookmarks window display URLs in a tooltip on hover when the entire URL cannot
be displayed in the URL column.

For the other cases, please file separate RFEs.

this bug sounds like 'title tips' a moderately high priority feature (I believe) for mail. You rollover the truncated subject of a 
message and immediately see the entire subject. This bug will surely depend on that work. Finding that bug will surely get oyu 
coser to getting this implemented.

Filed bug 45570 about bookmarks menu, which is IMO the most important one.
Reassigning 79 Bookmarks bugs to Ben.  I was told this was going to be done 
shortly about two months ago, but it clearly hasn't been.  I think that's long 
enough for all these bugs to remain assigned to nobody.

Bug 23460, on the other hand, is covering the Bookmarks menu in the Navigator 
window itself.

I suggest to refocus (again, sorry) on:

These two items are so closely related that they could be fixed in one "swoop". 

Depending on whether one were hovering over the name or the URL collumn, a
tooltip would appear showing the whole Name or URL.

I have no objections to moving this bug to bug 32157?.
I object. I guess it depends on how it's finally implemented but I'm not sure that once
the capability is created to do this you just get it for free in all of your apps that want to
use it (like mail, sidebar, bookmarks, history, etc.). I'd rather leave this as a depends
relationship and wait to see what happens.

This has been fixed, don't know when but probably a long time ago. Its
definitely WFM in Moz 1.5b, hovering over a truncated URL in the manage
bookmarks screen shows the tooltip.
