Try launching Firefox in safe mode either via the shortcut in the start menu or via the command line to see if it still occurs.

After launching are you able to use Firefox?
If so try launching Firefox with an url by exiting Firefox, typing http://www.mozilla.com into Start -> Run, and pressing ok.

Firefox doesn't query the OS for http handlers so this can't be an installer problem. Since it is launching a helper app over to File Handling.
Component: Installer → File Handling
QA Contact: installer → file.handling
