Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12
when opening the bookmarks window, the whole page appears on the screen; however, when the cursor is scrolled down the list, the subfolders don't becoem visible. I have to go to "organize bookmarks" to open the rest of the list so that the bookmarks first become visible, then usable
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.click on bookmarks
2.scroll down the column and nothing beyond that first page will open up
3.only when I click "organize bookmarks" do I see the subfolders; I can click on them, then, and they take me to the correct sight

Did you try resetting your toolbars? Start Firefox in safe-mode, in the dialog that is presented to you, check "Reset toolbars", confirm and restart Firefox.
First make a screenshot of you toolbars, for your icons and toolbars will be reset to default. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode_(Firefox)
