I don't know where documentation for this is, but I know I've talked about it with a few people and from what I can recall we decided to add application version tabs (just css+js) to the dictionary and locale pack lists. In our discussions it was to separate FF2 from FF3 since the add-ons aren't compatible with eachother but they are both supported products.

I think polvi did a bit of testing on some older dictionaries hosted on amo from his list at http://people.mozilla.com/~polvi/threedom/status-bars.html and was finding that they were compatible. cc'ing him.

oh, I guess discussion on version compat is in bug 411809. might also want to add something on the page that informs Mac users about how the dictionaries work there. -> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=424442 basically we should think of how to explain to users why and how they should get more dictionaries on the page, otherwise they might think of downloading when it really won't add to the capability they already have...

Same issue as FF2/FF3 applies for TB2/3 and SM1/2 actually (just as a note).

This is in Basil's court for now. He wants to reevaluate the tab idea since it's a break from the layout of all the other pages on AMO.

Reopening. I'm totally fine with closing this per se, but this broke dependencies in the bug universe. We need a way to offer Gecko 1.9 (fx3, sm2) users an update from the myspell versions of their dictionaries they use on Gecko 1.8.1 (fx2, sm1.9) to hunspell versions, while still offering the myspell versions to 1.8.1 users. For those dictionaries that are only available in myspell, it should be offered to both gecko 1.8.1 and gecko 1.9. While a tab may not be the right approach, but I don't find this elsewhere. When WONTIFIXing this, please carry over the requirements and the dependencies so that we don't end up jumping to wrong conclusions in, for example, the french dictionary bug.
