STR:
1. Visit ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/
2. Look at "ls-lR"
3. Look at "mozilla.org"
In the former case, there's "File:" (since we apparently can determine it's some sort of file); in the latter case, there's no icon at all.
On branch, there's a generic file icon for the former, and a folder icon (and italicized text, to indicate an alias/symlink) for the latter.
There's bug 133835 on symlink icon issues (and dupe bug 314584 which contains a patch), but at that bug 1) predates the dirListing regression and 2) is orthogonal to this, since we've no icon at all any more.

Removing the folder icon for symlinks isn't a regression but intentional, because as you say it was broken.

I've updated the summary in bug 133835.
