This is a relatively minor issue and should not be difficult to implement, but would be useful for those of us who set the start page to something other than the default. I don't see any reason there should not be a keyboard shortcut; this is the "home" page for Mail and ought to be called up by a home shortcut key. Reproducible: Always
do you mean command-1, bug 273763?
It sounds like the reporter is asking for a way to get back to the page set by the "Thunderbird Start Page" on the general settings tab, rather than just getting back to the mail window.

Firefox on linux uses Alt+Home for the home page, and I think windows too. Don't know about mac. If we add a shortcut it's probably best to use the same one as firefox. nit: the <key oncommand is one space off
Thanks for the comments, I will update the patch to match the behavior of the Firefox http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/base/content/browser-sets.inc#261
