If found this old bug (362812) describing the bug I am seeing. But it was reported for mac and quite old.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.ctrl-click a live bookmark on the toolbar
Actual Results:  
The entries of the bookmark (sometimes a popup warning that many tabs will show) will be created as new tabs as they should.
Also the dropdown list of entries will show.

Expected Results:  
The entries (or in some cases the popup warning) should be the only thing shown.

This bug was reported using Firefox 3.0 or older, which is no longer supported. The bug has also not been changed in over 500 days and is still in UNCO.
Reporter, please retest this bug in Firefox 3.6.10 or later using a fresh profile, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/managing+profiles. If you still see this problem, please update the bug. If you no longer see the bug, please set the resolution to RESOLVED, WORKSFORME.

I still see this behavior in Minefield nightly from 2010-10-17.

tested using default "Latest Headlines" livemark with url: http://en-us.fxfeeds.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/headlines.xml

livemarks are just folders now.
