Using 2000-006-13-08m17 commercial build linux rh6.0
Doesn't happen using NT 4.0
Doesn't happen on mac OS 9.0 (we don't automatically put up password dialog)
In the scenario listed below, the mail start page will not load until after
dismissing IMAP login password dialog (cancel or provide a valid or invalid
password) thereby leaving the message pane transparent.
1. Launch to a profile with first/default account being IMAP. Open that
account, select INBOX and provide proper login. Password is not
remembered/stored in the password manager.
2. Leave the IMAP account hierarchy expanded, make sure the message pane is
open and exit Netscape.
3. Launch directly to mail (use -mail argument at command line).
4. Mail window launches and IMAP login password dialog appears. Notice the
message pane is transparent, the contents of any window/desktop behind it shows
in the message pane area.
5. Dismiss the password dialog by cancel or providing password. Now the mail
start page loads.
Note: In this same scenario with NT 4.0, the mail start page loads before the
password dialog appears.
Summary: Blank message pane, start page won't until psswd dialog dismissed. → Blank message pane, start page won't load until psswd dialog dismissed.

I can also get this to happen on win32.
using the commercial build, do this:
$ netscp6 -CreateProfile foobar
$ netscp6 -P foobar -mail
you'll get the new account wizard, and the message pane will be garbage until
you dismiss it. after you dismiss it, we load the mailnews start page.
I'm not sure why having the account wizard or the password dialog prevents that
page from laying out.
perhaps we should load about:blank in there before trying to load the start
page.
I might give this bad boy to putterman.
either way, it's not a nsbeta2 bug.

clearing milestone, m17 and m18 are meaningless now. these need to be triages
along with the rest.

As bienvenu states, the fix is probably to start loading the page before any
authentication code.
Btw, how come this is Linux-only? Is the code executed differently on Windows
and MacOS?

Bulk reopening incorrectly expired bugs - no activity does not constitute no bug - these need proper checking.
