RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 394984

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.1.13) Gecko/20080311 Firefox/2.0.0.13
Build Identifier: 2.0.0.12 20080213

The update function hasn't worked since version like 1.X. It doesn't work in either 2.0.0.9 or 2.0.0.12 which are the only 2 versions of 2.0.0.X i have tried. The update function is grayed out and not selectable. I use Mac OS X version 10.2.8. So to update, I have to download everything manually and do essentially a re-install using the newer version. I run a windows version and it works fine, just the MAC version is hosed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Thunderbird 2.0.0.12
2. Select Help | Check for Updates
3.
Actual Results:
Updates is not selectable, it is grayed out.

Expected Results:
Updates shouldn't be gray'ed out and should be selectable.

Doing a re-install every time to update it sucks. I have to download like 22MB file and re-install it.
I also use Firefox and it updates fine. Also Thunderbird on my PC updates fine too so evidently it only happens on a MAC and probably on just OS 10.2.X? Like I said, Firefox updates just fine (using the same OS) so I know that the update function SHOULD work on Thunderbird too.
Are you sure you have proper rights to the thunderbird folder? The update is usually grayed out when you can't update the files that would need the updating.
Yep. I only have one account setup on my computer. I am not sure who the owner/group should be but I got rwx for the owner (Me) and r-- for the group (staff) and r-- for other, using an Xterm if that is what you mean. I even tried making the group rw- and other as rw- but that didn't work either. (I am somewhat UNIX literate but am not a programmer.) I have run fsck from single-user mode as well as Disk Warrior to make sure the permissions are set and to fix any disk errors but no disk errors were reported.

I am not sure what to make of it. Firefox works and updates just fine as does everything else. Tbird is the only one that doesn't. It used to last year when I was using version 1.X.X but it changed when I went to version 2.X.X. I still use MAC OS 10.2.8. I have even tried a virgin reinstall (removing the old Tbird and then loading the new one) to no avail. Any suggestions? It is getting tiresome having to download the entire 22MB and run the install program just to update it. Everything else in Tbird works fine and like I said, Firefox was updated at the same time and it has always worked. I was just a bit too lazy to report the error before and though it was a bug that would always be fixed with the next release.
Timothy do you still have the issue ?

Since Firefox, etc. update just fine I suspect that either Thunderbird was installed by a different user than the one trying to update which would be bug 394984 or that the perms on the Mac OS X build packaging were incorrect which I doubt. So, this is likely a dupe of bug 394984
