This bug exists in 1.5.5 as well as Version 2.0a1pre (1.9pre 2008040200)
Camino2.0a1pre cannot be deselected.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
0. Install the desired browser in Applications folder
1.Open Camino general preferences
2.choose Select...
3.navigate to the desired browser (Camino 1.5.5 in my case)
Actual Results:
previous default browser remains selected!
Expected Results:
My new selection should have become the new default browser

No, this is just LaunchServices sucking, unfortunately. LS will always choose the highest version (or the last installed, if the version is the same) copy of the application with the selected bundle identifier.
In order to set Camino 1.5.5 as the default, you'll have to delete Camino 2.0a1pre (throw it in the Trash and empty the Trash).
Status: UNCONFIRMED → RESOLVED

"Always" is a mighty strong word to use when talking about LaunchServices, but I agree that the other bug appears, on closer inspection, to be dealing with a situation where only one Camino is present and the formerly default Camino has been deleted. (I'm still not entirely convinced that other bug isn't LaunchServices's fault as well.)
This sounds like a situation where multiple versions of Camino are being kept installed on the same computer, which, yeah, LaunchServices doesn't like :(
