I had a similar issue last night - FF 3b5 crashed 4-5 times in a row while trying to access the help menu. I followed the same steps, but this morning it worked after hanging 4-5 seconds. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008051202 Firefox/3.0
Note: I am using a macbook running on the intel platform: target i386-apple-darwin8.8.4

Yes, leopard's help menu does tend to suck. Especially if you have a very large bookmarks structure in the menu. Sadly, there's no obvious way to suppress this "feature" in the app.
