User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14 Clicking on downloaded exe installer files generates spurious "External Protocol Request" popup making installation impossible. Several people have complained of this on the web. I think the problem is that mimetypes.rdf contains the line xmlns:NC="http://home.netscape.com/NC-rdf#" This URL no longer exists. So even if this isn't the cause of the download problem, it should be fixed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.download installer exe (eg from Download.com) 2.click on Open (OK on warning) 3. Actual Results: External Protocol Request popup An external application must be launched to handle file: links ... Expected Results: No "application" to launch, so you can't open the exe Duh
Component: Download Manager → File Handling
QA Contact: download.manager → file.handling
I'm not sure what could be causing this error, but it's unrelated to that URL. The URL in question is used purely as a namespace and is never contacted directly for any kind of validation.
Summary: bad URL in mimetypes.rdf prevents running downloaded exe installers → downloaded exe installers cannot be run
