I use WinXP in classic mode, and on unsecure sites grey larry on a grey background looks a bit naff. See attached screenshot

I thought the point was for Larry to look ghosted for regular sites? So if the goal is to de-emphasize him for non-TLS, the current scheme certainly does that...

It's a different gray (pure gray instead of warm gray) and that looks out of place. I think it also needs to have a border to help users see the shape.
