Permit the compression of (compressed) web pages in a format such as gzip or zip, and transparently decode them when they arrive.
mscott: this seems to suggest that maybe we should have a pref for automagic conversion that triggers the content-conversion in the URILoader. See related bug 35956

We support "Content-Encoding: gzip" and "Content-Encoding: deflate" (zip) per RFC 2616. I think that is sufficient. If you gzip a file and host it on apache, it should be served up with the "Content-Encoding: gzip" header, and moz should render it just fine. marking WORKSFORME
