When installing AVG 8, I am asked if I want to install AVG Security Toolbar. I say no and AVG installs an addon anyway. Also, it wants to quit any Mozilla applications running at the time of install. When prompted by Firefox if I want to quit, if I say cancel, AVG forces it to quit.

This not only affects Firefox 2, but Minefield, Songbird and Thunderbird. Basically, any Powered By Mozilla app I have running.

STR:
1. Open Firefox, Minefield, Thunderbird, Songbird, or any combination thereof.
2. Start the install of AVG 8
3. Accept all standard installation settings
4. When asked about "AVG Security Toolbar", uncheck "Yes"
5. Continue with the installation

RESULT:
At this point AVG will complain about any Mozilla apps that are running. At the same time, any Mozilla apps will complain about trying to be closed. If you do not let the apps close on their own, they will be force quit by AVG.

When you restart your Mozilla applications, Firefox and Minefield will have a new addon installed called "AVG Safe Search 8.0". This addon does not get installed into Songbird or Thunderbird.

I am not sure what can be done about this, if anything. I just wanted to bring this to Mozilla's attention.

It should be noted that I was only asked about "AVG Security Toolbar" and not "AVG Safe Search" during the install process.
I believe that this is more of a tech evangelism issue. Firefox 3 should be popping up the add-ons manager on startup to inform you that a new extension has been installed and I'd be interested to hear if that isn't the case, otherwise it may just be worthwhile reaching out to AVG.

The Add-on manager does pop up when Firefox is restarted.
INCOMPLETE due to lack of activity since the end of 2009.

We're now tracking such bugs. This doesn't mean it's something we can fix, merely something we hope to be able to point vendors to so they can investigate. This is an automated message.
