When you set the preference in the account settings to include a signature with the email, the option to place the signature at the top of the email is not there.

In outlook, If select a signature and it chooses the location of 'below wherever I am writing' by default. Which is quite well thought out.

Thunderbird, however, defaults to 'at the bottom of the email', and hides the actual configuration page to change this 4 pages deep inside cryptic screens.

Either the Outlook logic needs to be implemented, or the box to allow you to select the location for the signature needs to be close or right where you select the file.

Working in an IT company, noone here knows where this option is and thats with a room full of linux heads!
The default is to place a reply after the quote, followed by the signature
(the only possible choice for this setting). Signatures are added in the main account pane of the Account Settings, the reply and signature settings in a subpane of that. The "and place my signature above/below the quote" becomes accessible if "start my reply above the quote" is selected.

So, if I understand you correctly, this specific part of the Composition & Addressing pane should be moved to the main account pane just underneath the selection for the signature file?

Adding Bryan to CC list as this addresses a user-experience issue.
This may be another candidate for bug 448716 prefs reorganization.
The same thing happens to me and no matter what I do I cannot change it. I need the signature to be inserted at the very top of the reply or forward, not at the bottom.

That's misery. 13 years and no one has been able to fix it.

For several years, you can choose the position of the signature between "below the reply" and "below the quote" in "Composition & Addressing" (only when "start my reply above the quote" is selected). By choosing "below the reply", your signature is at the top of the reply.
This bug can be marked as Resolved.

Thanks Liscare!

The exact wordings in en-US version of Thunderbird (or any version with added en-US language pack):

When quoting, [start my reply above the quote | start my reply below the quote | select the quote]
and place my signature [below the quote (recommended) | below my reply (above the quote)].

Note that the second choice will obviously only be available after selecting start my reply above the quote in the first choice.

So to place your signature "at the top of the email" (below your reply, above the quoted message), you choose:

  • start my reply above the quote and place my signature below my reply (above the quote)

When you set the preference in the account settings to include a signature
with the email, the option to place the signature at the top of the email is
not there.

Location of the setting is on record as bug 335209. Yeah, somehow linking or combining the related options would be good.
I don't see any significant UX problems here, the option is not very hard to find now, and it's pretty self-explaining.
Also, zero interest in this bug for 13 years shows that most users don't have a problem here...
