What Xorg driver are you using? I've seen reports of Xorg crash when using nvidia drivers. See bug 427601 or bug 428066. There may be useful information in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old to see the previous version if Xorg was restarted).

I have installed the current nvidia driver based on Ubuntu 8.04: nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.12-16 The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old contains a backtrace (It's always the same): Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c780e] 1: [0xb7f7e420] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting The system in general responds with a restart of the X-Server. When switching of the nvidia-driver and use the open-source driver instead the error is not reproducable.
is it so hard to read referenced bugs? bug 427601 comment 11: > manually installing nvidia drivers 173.08 beta on Ubuntu 8.04 solved the issue
Successfully tested with nvidia drivers 173.08 beta. Thanks for your support.
